Newcastle Is The Cleanest Town!!!

on 23 February the Newcastle municipality hosted the awards ceremony for the "Cleanest Town In The Province", which was held at Pine Junction.


This is the second time that Newcastle was given the opportunity to host this prestigious function.

The "Cleanest Town" competition has been running for six years and saw 23 municipalities in KZN running for top honour. The judges had the daunting task of cutting it down to the top ten, from which the winner was chosen. The panel had to travel more than 2500km to visit the top ten candidates.

The main speaker of the evening was M.E.C, Mr. M.E.Mthimkhulu, from the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs.He had the pleasure of announcing the winning town. The audience went wild with happiness when Newcastle was announced 'The Cleanest Town', for 2007 and 2008. The grand prize was a cheque for R250 000.However, the city would only receive the cheque once it has produced a business plan outlining how they plan on using the money. Newcastle will also represent KZN in the national competition.

Newcastle Express asked the Mayor of Newcastle, Councilor C.L.Dube, how she felt about the win. She said that the competition was fierce, with everyone trying hard to win but she is very happy and grateful. Special thanks were given to the waste department and managers for
