Getting tough on fraudsters

Two South Africans Nationals were arrested on 12 February for fraud.

The Crime Intelligence Commercial branch unit under Covert Collection Directorate conducted at three months operation that led to the arrest of two Black females aged 28 and 22 respectively, who attempted to present fraudulent bank credit cards at retail stores around the Benoni area.

Jewelry designer all set to shine

Nokukhanya Nxumalo(28) from Dundee is currently living her dream as she designs and creates her own unique style of jewelry.

Although her shop is only three months old, Nokukhanya has big hopes for her future. Sitting in Nokukhanya's shop, one cannot help but marvel at her handiwork and creativity. smiling shyly. Nokukhanaya explains that she has always been creative.

"In school i used to draw a lot and think up different ideas for jewelry," explained Nokukhanya. As the grew older, so did her passion and desire for creating jewelry. "I started making jewelry after i finished my schooling and it is really something that i enjoy," she adds.

Storm causes havoc

Mrs Dlamini is one of many KwaMathukuza residents who were left homeless after a heavy storm hit the township on Wednesday, 11 February.

Blankets and mattresses now lie scatted on the grass in an attempt to dry up. Others were trying to build small shelters, with any material they could get their hands on.

A few were lucky enough to escape without serious damage to their property. many residents believe that their houses are not properly built which makes them vulnerable to storms.

Throught the ages

With February being the month of love, it's always nice to hear about love stories that have stood the test of time. Lukas Swanepoel(79) and his wife, Mavis(79), have shared a love story that will surely touch many hearts.

Lukas and Mavis have been married for 53 years and the twinkle in their eyes show that the love that they shared as youngsters still lingers in the air. According to Lukas, he and Mavis met as children when they as children when they went to same primary school in Newcastle and even went to same high school." The longest that we have been apart is five years, and that is when Mavis went to study to become a nurse, "says Lukas. "When she got back from university, we started a relationship. I always had the idea that we were meant for each other, "explains Lukas.

When asked what the secret of a happy marriage is, both Mavis and Lukas get a sly smile on their faces.

Fallen heroes of Spioenkop honoured

"There must have been six hundred dead men on this strip and there cannot have been many battle fields where there was an such accumulation of horrors within so small a compass," Deneys Reitz, describing the scene of the battle of Spioenkop, which had taken place on 23-24 January 1900.

Over 68 'boere' and 343 British had fallen in this battle, which marked the history books. National leader for that Freedom Front, Dr.Pieter Mulder, welcomed all at the recently held ceremony that was held at the historical site.

Members of the Freedom Front, as well as those that follow the historical battles of the Siege had joined to honor those that had fallen.

Local lass meets United States President

Being the only South African given the chance to witness the beginning of President Obama Barack's career in office, Ishara not only found the trip to the states inspiring but an emotional trip as well.

"President Obama Barack has archived hat many people , such as Martin Luther King, have dedicated their lives too, " explained Ishara.

"The experience was amazing and to witness the unity of the people as the whole country came to a stand still to watch President Obama's inauguration was inspiring," added Ishara, as she explained her experience in the united States.
