Dealing with Diabetes

" Our aim is to give people hope in the form of advice, literature and nutritional guidance. We hope that our little contribution will help minimize and correct the great number of misconceptions about diabetes, " explained sonja and Estelle.

Chaos at taxi rank

If not for the quick response of the SAPS and traffic officials from the Protection Services, matters could have taken a serious turn for the worse after chaos erupted at the taxi rank on Friday morning.

Taxi bosses were involved in a heated dispute regarding routes. According to an eye witness it was not long before the argument took a turn for the worse.

"They started to throw rocks at each other and was almost a full-out riot," explained the eye witness, who did not wish to be named.

Dealing with diabetes: risk factors

Sonja van der Merwe, a nutritionist, and Estellc Liebenberg, an educator, from the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, which is situated on 50 Murchison Street, have come forward to share advice and nutritional guidance with the Newcastle Community about diabetes.

"Our aim is to give people hope in the form of advice, literature and nutritional guidance. We hope that our little contribution will help minimize and correct the great number of misconceptions about diabetes." explain the two. This week's topic tackles the risk factors that can cause diabetes.

The risk factors are:
- Older age (40 years and older)
- Obesity
- Pre Diabetes: Blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Gangster activity threatens the innocent

Elderly shop owner, Kishore Gurtal, was left fighting for his life after he was brutally attacked by menacing youngsters last Thursday.

It's believed that the same youngsters that attacked Gurlal have been terrorizing members of the community over the past weekend. According to the shop owner, the first suspect entered his shop just before closing. "It must have been about 8.30pm. I was getting ready to close for the day and was busy with cash-up. My friend was with me at the time."

The owner says that he was not at all suspicious when the first suspect entered the shop. "He looked like a normal customer. After a few seconds I noticed a second youngster enter the shop."

Cleaning up the town

Jill and Michael Huang, two learners from Newcastle High School, have been chosen to participate in the competition Fantastic Plastic to create awareness about the importance of recycling plastic.If Michael and Jill win, they will be taken to Cape Town where they will be able to take part in the National Harbor Clean Up Project

Michael's part in the project is called EWaste and he has targeted electronic waste, along with the after life and the impact that electronic waste has on the environment

Information day launches a 'rising star'

MSC College recently held an information day for their students, and it was during the information day that students were treated to a spectacular singing performance by one of their fellow students.Anthony Fitchart, who is currently studying towards a certificate in computer software skills at MSC College, proved that he was not just a whiz behind a computer but behind a microphone as well.Fellow students thoroughly enjoyed Anthony's performance

Anthony, who lives in Utrecht, explains that music is his passion and is aiming to record his first cd in December this year.

NHS Rugby Players Excel

On Monday, 15 June, the Department of Education held rugby trials for the u/15 rugby teams of the Amajuba District

These two district teams will take part in an inter-districts tournament in Richards Bay from 20 - 21 June

For the trials, 70 u/15 boys arrived at the fields at Arbor Park and two squads of 22 players were selected. Ten players from NHS were selected for the squad.The achievement of these players top a very successful rugby season that the boys have had for their school team
