Fishing contest a success

Midas hosted an overnight angling competition on Saturday, 17 October, and Sunday, 18 October, at Chelmsford Dam.

The angling competition was a success with approximately 260 anglers flocking to the dam to participate in the angling competition. Various prizes for the different categories were up for grabs for those that took part in the competition.

Newcastle digs deep for Toy Story

Newcastle residents contributed a whopping R100 000 to the East Coast Radio's Toy Story campaign this weekend.

Ten Years ago Toy Story started as part of East Coast Radio's corporate social investment campaigns.

Buses and taxis clash

Chippas bus drivers are angry and demanding action.

They say that for more than a week now taxi's owners have been harassing them and forcing them to stop their routes to Johannesburg.

The Newcastle Express reporter met with Some of the drivers and assistant drivers at the police station where they were seeking help. They say that they are being forced off the road or told to turn back.

Newcastle rate payers protest

On Wednesday, 7 October, Newcastle rate payers took to the streets and protested against the high rates that they pay on a monthly basis.

It is alleged that newcastle residents are paying double that rates og neighbouring towns, the rates in Newcastle went up by 75% and residents think this is unreasonable.

Celebrating the Festival of Lights

Diwali is called the 'Festival of Lights', and during the festival "Divas' are lit.

'Divas' are cotton string wicks that are inserted in small clay pots and filled with oil, to signify the victory of good over evil within an individual.

While Diwali is popularly known as the "Festival of lights', the most significant spiritual meaning is " the awareness of the inner light", in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness

Moon festival fever hits Newcastle

On Saturday, St Dominic's school was filled with sights and sounds and awash with colour, as the school came alive to display the vibrant culture of the Chinese and Taiwanese communities, at the Moon Festival.

Newcastle residents come out in their numbers to get taste of this unique experience. Chinese school students treated the crowd to poetry, dance and music.

Suspects sentenced to 55 years

On 4 September 2007, at approximately 1am in the morning, two suspects entered Zandile Nkwanyana's room by breaking a window, the two men then took her out of the house and proceeded to rape and kill her. She was then thrown on a path that was filled with water.

At first it was not known waht had happened to the deceased, Zandile Nkwanyana, untill Inspector Sipho Oscar Mchunu from Newcastle LCRC collected fingerprints from the glass that was found at the scene of the crime
